Winners of the 2nd section, Yorkshire area brass band finals
"Ball control" , that is Eric Ball control for the South Yorkshire Police Brass Band. Today the band won the tough Yorkshire area region with buckets of emotion and a few tears. The final results were 1. South Yorkshire Police Band and best soloist prize awarded to Leisa Mallalieu (Principal Cornet) 2. Barnsley Chronicle Band 3. Knottingley Silver 4. Strata 5. Lindley 6.Clifton and Lightcliffe Adjudicators Comments Yorkshire Regional Brass Band Championships 2011 Bradford 05-03-2011 Test Piece – Resurgam – Eric Ball John Roberts Very long C to open! Very good pp effect. Animando flows well. Tuning 4 before ‘2’ is not as good as earlier. ‘2’ good tempo, a little untidy to ‘3’. A clear attempt at dynamic contrasts. ‘5’ good style. Pause rather short to ‘Lento’. Thus very shaky here to open – only poco animando. Adagio good p to start. Very nice cornet and good style. Flows well. ‘9’ good balance and sound. ‘10’ Euph good effort sharp on G’s though. ‘11’ good dynamic. ‘12’ very good tempo and control here well handled to ‘15’. Clean attack on shock notes – good. ‘19’ good balance and style to ‘20’. Cornets a bit wild to ‘22’! ‘22’ good sounds from lower band, D’s not together. Again very long low C to ‘23’! nice control and dynamic and a good warm band sound, nice dim to ‘24’. ‘24’ quickish – sharp Euph G’s again just spoils then on B’s & A’s not in tune (Pity) – intonation just fades away here. ‘25’ more time needed on last few bars. A commendable effort from MD. Mid band (particularly cornets) very tight ensemble in faster passages and a serious attempt of quieter sections. Well done. Philip Harper Good attempt at pp to begin but dim not well balanced into ‘1’. ‘1’ itself needs a bit more warmth in the sound, as well as animando. ‘2’ has lots of dynamism and you attempt dynamics well. Sometimes the tuning suffers as a result. ‘Lento Tranquillo’ likewise – perhaps it’s too quiet for some of you? Neat at ‘8’ and has power afterwards. ‘Adagio’ – really well done cornet – full of expression + classy! Music has good flow here and ff is not overdone – I like it! Euph plays well but is sharp on G’s and F’s! More drive at ‘11’ – good. I like the way you’ve balanced the sounds at ‘12’ (particularly shock notes) well done MD. ‘15’ pretty much unscathed – well done! Lots to enjoy here. ‘22’ well conceived and bass trom pins it all together reall well (good tuning!) ‘23’ dim is better than first time round! ‘24’ builds well – but Euphs really must watch top G’s and F#’s – so sharp they spoil the really controlled picture you otherwise build. Overall – you made much effort to play the dynamics – some of which came off, some didn’t. Cornet soloist was brilliant. Watch for some basic tuning issues. Thanks a lot.
