Butlins 2012 adjudicators remarks

By Ian Atkinson - Posted on 24 January 2012

The below are a transcription of the adjudicators comments on the South Yorkshire Police Band's performance of High Peak by Eric Ball. Performed Saturday 21st January 2012 at Butlins, Skegness.

  • A nice introduction (of not 100% secure) - I really like your use of the quieter dynamics.
  • 2 could sing more. 9 before '3' a secure solo line.
  • A nice cornet solo & apex of cresc b5 of '4' is super.
  • 'Poco Allegro' has a nice 'leggiero' feel & it all has a nice shape.
  • 'Ascent' in tubas could have had a more effective 2 bar cresc but music has a positive feel.
  • '11' a nice bass trom / Eb tuba duet. '11' b7 -> mutes intonation.
  • Dramatic into 'Allegro moderator' - good tempo here - but not all low brass detail heard in triplets.
  • 6th of '15' 2nd & 3rd cornets ??
  • 'Attainment' solid low brass
  • Trombone trio has a nice 'cantando'
  • '17' could be more incisive. 9 from end very un-co-ordinated in 3rd beat semiquavers.
  • A good high C.

Thankyou,Steve Sykes~~~~

  • 'Vision' - Well done euphonium. Cornet entries should be semiquavers not triplets !!
  • Lento could have more poise - well done flugel.
  • 'Aspiration' - Nice sounding solo corner and band dynamically feel more comfortable. '5' good shape and style shown, if a little fast.
  • 'Ascent' - Decisiveness shown in melodic tune, although basses could be a little more "heavy". Good dynamics through 'Alpine' motifs.
  • Accel before '12' is well managed. '12' good band ensemble if a little steady!
  • More air needed through triplet semiquavers!! Effect lost!
  • 'Attainment' - '16' feels unsettled in tempo. '17' bars 2 & 4 don't work and ensemble is rocky towards the end.
